Nilgiri (or Blue Mountain) biosphere consists of Silent Valley, Mudumalai, Mukurthi (Otty), Bandipur, Nagarhole and Wayanad forest with an approximate area of 5000sqkms. Most accessible and easily available birds area in Nilgiri biosphere are Wayanad forest division, Mazinagudi & Kallatty area of Mudumalai, Mangala & Kaniyapura in Bandipur, Kabini in Nagarhole area for forest birds. The lagoons and lakes in northern part of the biosphere offer good number of migratory water birds. Kokkerabelur pelicanary, Renaganathittu birds sanctuary and numerous lagoons in the catchment of Cavery river basin are potential for water birds, raptors and vultures.
