Why Trek in Western Ghats

The Western Ghats ranges spread southward in the west coast of India, comprising Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamilnadu and Kerala States of India. In the north the Western Ghats originates after the River Tapti and continue to spread towards south till Srilanka. The Indian part is divided into lower Ghats, Central Ghats and Southern Ghats. The south western ghats is home for many peak including Anamudi, the highest peak in south India. The forests, ranging from tropical rainforest to dry savanna.Western Ghats is one of the biodiversity hotspot on earth having more than 20 forest types and amazing fauna. GRASSLAND TREK 

 

IN  ERAVIKULAM NATIONAL PARK

The main body of grass land trekking is through a high rolling plateau with with a base elevation of about 2000MSL. Then most of the mountains are raise 100-675mts.. The vast expanse of grass lands inter-spread with high altitude cloud forests, streems and waterfalls are the feature of the landscape.This area is said to be the upper reaches of the western ghats mountains .It is described as the ‘tropical montane’. The area experienced heavy rainfall during June-Desomber. January-May is the dry season. In winter the temperature may godown to bellow freezing point. The area is rich in rare rchids and balsam.

 

 

A specimen itinerary 3 nights and 4 days

Day-1 Pick up from your port of arrival, ie, either at Cochin or Coimbatore. A day of rest and preparation. Stay at a hotel in Munnar Hill station. A brief visit to tea plantation to get an awareness about the history of Munnar.

Day-2 Pick up by Jeep from the Hotel with packed breakfast at 7am. Proceed to ‘Pettymudi’ in the foothill of Eravikulam National Park at an altitude of 2000MSL. There our field crew will wait for you. They are the native tribal men called Mudhuvas. They are with us for carrying our food and water, guiding us in the jungle, hosting us in their hamlet and preparing food for us. After a brief introduction start walking to the top through high altitude grassland. On the way they will take you to the high altitude montane forest to introduce the flora and fauna. You may be observed by Nilgiri Tahr and even a leopard from a near by rocky rolling hill.  Lunch break and rest. More hiking to watch wildlife and wilderness. There would be chances of flying clouds in the afternoon. Our team will take you to their hamlet. Over night camp at Tribal hamlet. They will cook and sing for you. Then the night and wind , the cicadas and numerous cries of the night..

Day-3 The call of Nilgiri Langur from the near by forest canopy will wake you up. Our team will wish you with a cup of fresh tea . You can come out of the camp and touch the dawn.After breakfast and farewell we will take you for the hike of the day. In this day you have to cross few streams and take rest in a hut built by the British Planters. The day also end at a hamlet.

Day-4 After breakfast prepare for the end of the trek. By noon we will be back at the base station at the foothill of Rajamala. There wait our jeep to transfer you to the Hotel.

 

 DRYFOREST WALK- CHINNAR  CAMP.     

Chinnar Valley is the one and only rain shadow of the western ghats of Kerala spread an area of about 200 sqkm, both in Tamilnadu and Kerala. The Chinnar River originated from Anaimudi, the highest peak of south India and flowing to the east. The Valley was an ancient human settlement dated back to  9000BC marked with rock shelter paintings, megalithic burials, animist’s sacred groves and cave temples. Now ¾ of the valley is under wildlife sanctuary and National park with rare flora and fauna. This programme consisits of trekking through wildlife zone of the sanctuary, guided by a naturalist and tribal trekking guides, and camping inside the sanctuary. The The trekking route passes through chinnar valley, comprises an area of 80 sqkm with unique thorny scrub and cactus forests bordered with thick groves on the streams sides. The lofty mountains of the Western Ghats leaning towards the Decan Plateau protect the valley like boundary walls. The Valley is rich in wildlife like Elephants, wild gaur leopard, sambar, wild dogs, spotted deer, civets, Slender Loris, and many other mammals, reptiles and birds. There are few waterfalls and pools in the river which can cool us in the mid day.

We will arrange your pick up from Cochin, Ootty, Coimbatore or Munnar or you can report at Chinnar our base station at Marayoor. The trekking starts after lunch.You need to carry only a small backpack fit to take your dress and personal belongings enough for number of days as you wish to stay. The trekking route is designed as per climate and number of days. Any how a specimen ideal itinerary is as follows

Day-1 The trekking programme starts from the Chinnar base camp after lunch. We will guide you through the revirine forest to check in at the Tree house. This walk under the cool shade through the river side will recharge us. After check in the tree house we will precede the trek to spot more wildlife in an area called 'Kallikkad' which means cactus forest to spot more wildlife. There are few hillocks around , which gives us a panoramic view of the forests as well as the endless mountain folding. Return to the camp before night fall. The tree house is in the confluence of two streams in an animal crossing. After dinner take the rope ladder to get the tree house. You can go early to bed or listen to the call of the night, or watch stars by sitting in the balcony

Day-2 Wake up with the call of birds and monkeys. After a hot black tea we will start our hike to the next station - the hill top house. It is about 8 km. away from the tree house. On the way we will stop near a tribal village. They will make some milk tea and breakfast. After a short break, proceed our treks to the hill top house. We will reach the camp before lunch. Our loving tribal guards will prepare lunch for us. You can take rest under the cool Varanda of at house looking the impregnable open forest around. After lunch and rest we will start hiking to near by waterholes to spot more wildlife. Before night falls we will return to the camp. You can take a bath and prepare for the campfire dinner. If the sky is clear you can see millions of stars and sparking of shooting stars.

Day-3 If you wake up before sunrise you can witness the amazing virginity of dawn, enriched with the calls of birds and animals. The camp is in such a position to see the sunrise and golden Rocky Mountains. After bed coffee we will trek to the near by waterhole to spot more wildlife. Return to the camp for breakfast. After breakfast we will start hiking to the next camp, which is a log house near the river side. We will reach there before lunch . Here you can go for a swim or dip in the pond. After lunch and rest we will start hike in near by area to explore wildlife and nature. As like in earlier camps we will have campfire dinner.

Day- 4 After morning hike and breakfast we will return to the base camp. Farewell

 

 

 

 

 

 

EVERGREEN TREK-

PARAMBIKULAM CAMP

This trekking programme is designed through evergreen and moist forests of western ghats. This is rough & tough than dry forest trek. It is conducting in Parambikulam Tiger reserve. It is one of the best protected wildlife sanctuary in south India. We will arrange your pick up from Cochin, Coimbatore, Ootty Palakkad or Munnar - which are the nearest tourist destinations. The minimum duration for the programme will be 2 nights and 3 days. Please go through a specimen itinerary, but can be extended to any number of days.

DAY-1 We will reach the sanctuary around noon. After lunch we will proceed for a hike through the wet evergreen forest of Karianchola National park. By evening we will reach the Rangers camp in a moist forest area

DAY -2 After bed coffee we will return to base station. After breakfast  continue the hike. This hike will be through a century old tramway path built during the colonial period to carry huge teak trees from Anamalais to Cochin Port. This tracing the tramway route, which is now under the rule of Animal Kingdom; where there is chance to encounter a tiger maharaja, and his allies, his subjects like deer, gaur elephants, bear etc. Resting in under the umbrella of banniyan trees, listening the chorus of birds like hornbills, mynas and others. By evening we will reach the camp-which is cottage used by rangers.

DAY-3 After breakfast the return hike to the base station will start. It will be through a different path and reach the base station by lunch time

 
 

 

RAINFOREST TREK - SILENT VALLEY NATIONAL PARK

Rainforest trekking one of the most difficult walking tour. It is ussually conducted in Silent Valley National Park and Anamudichola National Park. Silent valley is an eighty sq.km preserve of low altitude tropical rain forest. It support a large numeber of flora and fauna. It is one of the hot spot of plants and amphibians on earth. Along with a variety of  rich faunal wealth this park is known for the Lion Tailed Macaque, an endemic species of primate of Western Ghats. The park is recomended as a major abode of Western Ghats Endemic Bird Area. Anamudichola National Park is the part of Sholas (High altitude Cloud forests) of Eravikulam National Park. Formerly known as Mannavan Chola (King of Thick forst) , this forest type is believed to be more than 60MY old.

The Trekking Programme in these two forests are ranging from One night 2 Days to 3 nights 4 days.

NILGIRI TRAIL -  A day trek from Nilgiris (Ootty to Masinagudi)

CHINNAR TRAIL - Full day trek in Chinnar ( Can be customised for 1 night and 2 days)

MARAYOOR TRAIL - Cultural and village walk through Marayoor valley, including ethnic lunch served in banana leaf.

MUNNAR TRAIL - Day walks through plantations and reserves.

THATTEKAD TRAIL - Day walk through Thattekad bird sanctuary .( Can be customised for 1 night and 2 days)

CHIMMONY TRAIL - Day trek in Chimmony wildlife santuary (75kms. from Cochin)( Can be customised for 2 days)
