Wildlife of Chinnar is composed of residents, seasonal migrants and restricted species . Major mammal species are Elephants, gaur, Leopard, wild dogs, potted deer, sambar, barking deer, Macaque , wild boar etc. Grizzled giant squirrel, tufted langur etc are restricted species of South Western Ghats. Drastic altitude variations in a short distance provide high diversity of birds species. Apart from endemic shola birds, the forest is the home for many Deccan endemics and migrants which are unusual in other parts of Kerala, including blue faced malkoha, sirkir malkoha , yellow throated bulbul, grey headed bulbul etc. It is the only natural habitat of starred tortoise in Kerala.
